PREPARING THE LAND
The Raymond Floyd name is synonymous with excellence in the golf world, and the construction of his course designs follows a rigid standard.  The quality of each hole is dependent on the quality of the preparation beneath it, and Floyd designs have an infrastructure engineered to support world class playing surfaces. Raymond also places a high priority on using the best growing grasses for each project’s location and climate.

Floyd Design creates a construction timetable and project updates to keep clients informed on the progress of the course construction. Final pre-construction design plans are approved by the client.  Mr. Floyd’s personal participation in the process includes the selection of trusted construction partners.

“Nature never duplicates herself, but often times I will find a natural setting that reminds me of a particular golf hole or specific design and I will try to incorporate aspects of those golf holes or designs.”

Raymond Floyd believes that a number of a golf course design features identify themselves during the construction process itself. The way a piece of land drains, rock features unearthed during excavation, or trees that a client wants to keep … things happen during the construction process that can influence a design, or create opportunities.

“You make choices in designing holes. Often you’ll see a hole in your routing that would be fantastic for the low handicap or professional players, but near impossible for high handicappers. You have to adjust and make the hole challenging and fun for all skill levels.”
